Chrome’s On It

Rating: 3.5

Label: IAMSOUND Records

Telepathe have come out with their third official release to date and it begs to be played loudly. Brooklyn vocal duo Melissa Livaudais and Busy Gangnes once again bring an ecstasy-induced, haunting sound to Chrome’s On It; a two song EP with remixes by Mad Decent, Mae Shi, Frankmusik, Free Blood (of !!!) and Bobby Evans. The sound, which mainly revolves around the devastating harmonized vocals of the girls, is backed up by Ryan Lucero.

Both “Chrome’s On It” and “Bells” are complex, lush songs that could rightfully be soundtracks for modern vampire movies. The EP is a broad mixture of layered trance-filled drum machine beats, early techno, dub, hip-hop and an over-encompassing pop sentimentality. It’s instantly accessible while reserved enough to let sounds develop with each listen.

Oddly enough, this EP doesn’t really seem to have a home. Unlike other artists spinning dissonance filled beats, Telepathe isn’t going to be a dance party hit. Even with the remixes, the beat is just a bit too slow for that scene. Chrome’s On It seems to prefer the headphones, car stereo or pre-party soundtrack to being the song the DJ plays after Crystal Castles.

Chrome’s On It highlights the promise of Telepathe’s upcoming full-length release Dance Mother , which is set to come out in early 2009. The nine song track-list will feature a slightly different version of “Chrome’s On It” but won’t have “Bells.” If you love pop, get it.
