Pomagrita Punch

Festive and full of alcohol

Regardless of whether you view the holidays as something to be endured or the most wonderful time of the year, something that both sides can agree on is that alcohol enhances (and sometimes blurs) the season. As I have recently learned, a simple but important key to a good party is punch. It’s easy, it’s relatively cheap, it makes a lot, and it spares the host from mixing drinks all night. One of the best for the season is, for lack of a better name (I was told Persephone Punch was too pretentious), Pomagrita Punch. As the astute will guess, it is a modified margarita, with the prime ingredient being pomegranate juice. It’s very drinkable, refreshing, not too sweet and is a lovely, festive red. This is the recipe I’ve been using, but one of the great features of punch is that it leaves plenty of room for improvisation.

In a bowl or large pitcher mix:

Half a bottle (or more, depending on the pitcher/bowl) of white tequila. Cheap brands work fine.
A 32 oz. bottle of pomegranate juice. The sparkling juice works well too, gives it a little more fizz.
8 oz. Rose’s sweetened lime juice
6 oz. Triple sec (optional)

It’s best if it can chill in the fridge for a few hours. Proportions are according to personal taste/how strong you like it. Garnish with lime wedges and pomegranate seeds. If you want to take if up a notch, freeze some pomegranate seeds in ice cubes. It’s also better if the individual glasses are rimmed with salt.

Noel!
