Nothing surpasses the moment when Speed bursts free from his cartoon kid like origins and becomes the fully adult hero he was always meant to be as takes the former race champion to racer school.

Fantastic review. The first 17 minutes alone are better, and tell more story than most feature length films do today. Truly a hidden gem. So glad I got to see it in theater!

Despite being a Fuller fan, I've never felt the slightest curiosity about this film -- maybe it was the cast, the period, the title -- but something about it always put me off. Unfortunately, the problem with good writing, like good food, is it can tempt you to indulge in things you know are bad for you, and after reading this informative and entertaining exegesis of an obscure (I won't say neglected) movie, I feel compelled to seek it out.

Oh well, Sam certainly deserves to have even his misfires seen, and at least now I know what I'm getting into.

I knew I wasn't the only one above the age of 7 who thought the movie was fantastically executed, and you have just written all of the evidence to support it.
Thank you VERY much!

Yes. And the final 17 minutes bring you nearly to tears with incredible, vivid imagery that has yet to be duplicated.

Good article. Someday Speed Racer will get the proper recognition it deserves.

It frightens me, in a "speed-of-culture" kind of way, that we might currently live in a "post-dubstep" world. We are post-everything, it seems.

Hi Lyn- Thanks for taking the time to read my review! I am glad you liked the book so much. My criticism really didn't have much to do with what happened during the war. It had more to do with the amount of time devoted to a flaccid love story and Orringer's purplish prose. In fact, I found the later half of the book (the work camps and Budapest during WWII) to be the most gripping part of the entire book.

I just finished this book, and I loved it. You are really too harsh in your criticism. While it is hard to believe that Andras could have survived so many times in the work camps, and that Klara and her two little children could have survived the horror that was Budapest in WWII, I, for one, was thrilled that they did and could eventually come to America.
